Metal bars again? her mind screamed furiously. It's not fair...
What am I doing here? I've landed myself in another mess. she thought miserably as a human with a removed expression on it's face pushed food and water in the cage. His eyes brightened, as though his stupid brain suddenly realized that Ophelia was there "Hey there pup. Your a nice lookin' one, bit skinny though." he patted her head, ignoring the fact that her ears flattened at his touch "Somebody will get you quick. Don't worry. Be a good girl".
He wandered off leaving Ophelia alone. She harhumphed causing a nearby employee to laugh "You guys are just like little people" she shook her head in amusement.
I beg to differ she thought rolling her eyes.
"Hey, you" she was suddenly pulled away from glaring at the woman when a voice from across the tile floor sounded "You're new, right?" it was an older dog with a whitened muzzle looking cheerfully from it's prison.
"Yeah! Hey, you been here a while?" she wagged her tail. Happy that this cold place didn't have to be a lonely one.
"Oh, not too long. I'm sure you won't be here this long. The people love young puppies such as yourself. Me? Aw, some old man will take me home some day and feed me wet food and oatmeal till the day I die" the dog laughed, causing his long fur to shake around his neck.
"Well, it's good to have a dream. Last time I got outa here I was eating oatmeal out of garbage cans. And it was half baby spittle. So... What's your name?" Ophelia grew suddenly curious.
"Jess" the dog sighed "It's a plain name but I can deal OK with it. What's yours?"
"Well, according to the people, Opha, which is suprisingly close to my real name, Ophelia. Jess is a good name though--" the click of plastic on plastic could be heard from down the hall and all the lights turned off. The chorus of distressed animal sounds paused for a moment until the faint sound of "Be good, guys" driftted down the hall. It was so dark, even with Jess's company Ophelia shivered. As her eyes began to adjust to the dark she realized almost all of the other dogs were eating. Including Jess.
Ophelia decided to join in.
The food was stale, the water was warm. Grunts of disgust found their way to her ears frequently and soon she was mimicing them.
After a minute or two her meal was finnished.
"Good night!" called Jess, followed by muttered goodnights from all the dogs.
"Good night, Jess" Ophelia was already curled up and preparing to sleep.
Soon the lights were one again and the barking was drowning her again. Her spirit felt snubbed "Do we ever get excersize time?" Ophelia tried to sound casual, tried to hide her desperation.
Jess cocked his head "Well, yes. Mostly huskies, like you. See, this is a sledding town. Dogs like me, retreivers, we don't do as well here. Like I said before, you'll get adopted right away." as Jess finished talking someone knelt down beside her cage to inspect her.
Ophelia cowered "Hey! What's he doing, Jess?" Jess laughed at Ophelia's comment.
"Don't worry about it so much."
The man pulled her from the cage and clipped a leash onto her cheap collar. He pulled her to the front desk "Ima take this one on a little stroll"
"M'kay. Wait, Greg, did you walk im' yet?" asked the bored looking secretary.
"Nah" Greg dismissed her question and pushed open the door. Ophelia caustiously stepped into the open space. Her deep breath was caught short with a sharp tug of the leash from Greg. She stifled a snarl.
The walk lasted for half an hour and a few blocks. Ophelia wasn't at all tired when she was shoved back into her cage. "Jeez. I hope I never havta do that again!" she cried, causing Jess to laugh again.
"Well, if you hated it that much maybe you'll get a little luck next time..."
